Hello I would like share something I found quite interesting.
The scenario was told by my lecturer,Starts like this,
A patient comes to a doctor and get diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.
The doctor wrote for him some prescription on some medicine and asked the patient to take them on time and maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Then the doctor asked the patient come for second check up on blood glucose level after two months.
The patient agreed and left.
The patient followed the prescribed medicine and maintain his life style for the first 10 ten days but since the patient is always busy with his hectic work schedule,he begin to neglect his prescriptions and advises given by the doctor.
He ignored to exercise his routine work outs and began to take sweet items.
He even forget to take his prescribed medicines.
Later on, 15days before his appointment with the doctor, he remembered about the appointment. He got scared that the doctor might scold him if his blood glucose level found to be elevated.
Then he began to start the advised routine and take the pills on time.
The day to see the doctor came by and the doctor took his blood for some tests.
Although his blood glucose level is at the range of normal, but yet the doctor found out about what he did one months ago and again advised him to be strict in his lifestyle and follow the medicines properly.
How did the doctor found out?
There is a test called Glycated Hemoglobin Estimation.
Glycated haemoglobins are formed when a glucose gets attached to the normal adult hemoglobin.
(N-Teminal Beta-chain of Hemoglobin) + Glucose = Glycated Glucose
Once attached , glucose is not removed from the hemoglobin and remain attached inside the Red Blood Cell through out its life span of 120days.
The normal glyacated glucose level in the body is less than or equals to 6% and this level rises in Diabetic Mellitus patients.
The glycated hemoglobin levels are more stable than blood glucose level and it is not affected by the day to day fluctuations in blood glucose level due to exercise or recent food intake.
Glycated hemoglobin level reflects the average blood glucose concentration over the previous 6 to 8 weeks.
Therefore, it is an index of glycemic control in diabetic patients for the last 2 months.
So, don't get caught for being lazy. You should not lie to your doctor if you want to receive a good treatment and get healed fast.
But there is more to this test, it also used for prognosis of a patient's condition and also to test the effective of the drugs used.
